History of the church.
St. Francis Xavier was traveling in the sea between Mylapore and Nagapattinam in April 1545. At that time, When he was somewhere around Pondicherry, a heavy cyclone disturbed his journey. So he landed in Uppalam, Pondicherry, and spent a few weeks in uppalam. He met people and preached about God. During the 18th century itself, there was a chapel in his name at Uppalam.
After the construction of Sacred Heart Church in 1909, Uppalam became a substation to Sacred heart Parish. On 23-01-1998, Uppalam became a separate Parish. Then the old church was demolished, and a new church was built in the same place due to the enormous effort of Rev. Fr.M.Swaminathan. And blessed by His Eminence Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy in the presence of Archbishop S. Michael Augustine and several other bishops from Tamilnadu on 22-09-2000. The Annual Feast celebration is on 12th March.
